Integrated Geochemical Interpretation

Established in 1983

Established in 1983, when Chris Cornford left Britoil to go it alone, IGI Ltd is a geochemical and petroleum systems consultancy, data services provider and producer of geochemical interpretation and data management software.

Initially run from the sitting room of a converted water mill in central Scotland, IGI grew organically, establishing a reputation for rigorous, lateral thinking, innovating in geoscience and then starting to create software. Writing our own software initially for internal use only.

Growing up

While conceived in Scotland, IGI soon moved to Devon, which still hosts our office. With the arrival of Paul Farrimond from Newcastle University IGI grew more rapidly employing and training many geoscientists, who are now spread around the world.

IGI continued to develop its reputation for providing scientific insight, focussing on data before it became widely popular, compiling extensive data sets across the North Sea and Norwegian continental shelf, and beyond.

In 2013 IGI started to re-write it's beloved (if slightly clunky) p:IGI-3 software. In 2017, we launched Metis our data management software and continue to develop data management services based around this. In 2022 we started a joint industry partnership to develop advanced Machine Learning tools.

Into the future

We continue to work in the energy industry, but are aware of the changes in the wider world. We are proud of our reputation as innovators whilst still being a small, friendly and focussed company.

From 2019 we started to develop expertise in carbon storage and hydrogen exploration and modelling.

In 2024 we began to work with North Devon UNESCO Biosphere and started to develop applications for environmental monitoring and modelling.

We continue to evolve, learn and adapt to the changing world around us.
