25-Norhopanes have been reported in biodegraded oils since the late 1970s, and Seifert & Moldowan (1979) proposed that the methyl group at C-25 in the regular hopanes was removed by microbial demethylation associated with the degradation at the oil/water contact of an oil accumulation.

This technical note outlines a workflow using the IGI Machine Learning (ML) tools to reproduce the oil-family framework reported by Holger Justwan, Birger Dahl and Gary Isaksen in their 2006 study of oils and condensates from the Norwegian South Viking Graben.

Clients using our ML tools often mention that it can be difficult to know which models to use. We generally advise users to start with the simplest appropriate model as a baseline (this is the default option), then to try additional models for comparison.
