“Numerical Modelling of CO2 Migration and Mineralisation for Geological Storage in Basalts”

As part of a multidisciplinary team of researchers from academia and industry, IGI will be involved in the supervision of a PhD fellowship to be submitted to the Portuguese Investigation and Innovation Agency (AI2) by the 31st of March (2026 Call for PhD Studentships – Regular Line of Application - FCT).

The modelling-based PhD project will develop a high performance open-source software for the reactive flow modelling of the transport and trapping mechanisms of CO2 fluids injected in basaltic reservoirs for carbon storage. The research will be hosted in Kiel, Germany, at GEOMAR and at the Faculty of Science of the University of Lisbon (Portugal), and will involve the Universidade Nova of Lisbon, MARUM (Bremen, Germany), the Portuguese Net4CO2 collaborative laboratory for sustainable industry solutions, and IGI (UK).

This expression of interest aims to identify students with a strong interest in fluid flow modelling in fractured media, coupled with geochemical reaction-path modelling to pursue their PhD research in a multidisciplinary environment, ultimately aiming to promote solutions to mitigate the effects of climate change associated with greenhouse gas emissions induced by industrial activities.
